Katching Up in Kuala Lumpur and Georgetown!

Katching up in Kuala Lumpur and George Town

After a long but relatively painless journey back to SEA, I was very glad to see Sam waiting at our hotel that he had already checked into a few hours earlier. We stayed for 3 nights in Kuala Lumpur, all of which were spent in the Chinatown area which is fairly central. The hotel we stayed at for the first 2 nights was excellent, we shared a nice neon-themed room and had access to an infinity pool and sky bar which gave a phenomenal view of the city both during the day and at night.

Within 20 minutes of arriving at the hotel, we set out to find a beer. We found a bar at a questionable hostel, where we sat with an Aussie, a Ukrainian and a 40 year old English man as they renditioned a song about Kuala Lumpur for a good amount of time…

Jet lag has been very prominent since returning, so I haven’t seen a morning until today.

On our first full day, Sam woke earlier and visited a mall with friends Rohan and Tom. Later on they returned to our hotel, where we spent a few hours taking in the views of the city skyline. For dinner, we headed into town to eat at an authentic local diner. A few chilled beers were had and then it was time for bed.

The next day was slightly more productive. We started the day by going to see the Petronas Towers, the tallest twin towers in the world and the staple landmark of KL. We took some photos and had a coffee before returning back to our hotel and collecting our bags to move to our next hostel. We met Rohan and Tom at the new hostel and promptly caught a taxi to the Batu Caves. It was nice to get out and see something but I think we were all slightly underwhelmed with the temple within the caves, especially when it started to rain with intent. The temple entrance was full of monkeys, which is the first time I’ve seen wild monkeys. I’ve decided that they are interesting from a distance, but very scary when close!

When we returned to the city it was time for lunch and a look around the market. We all ate traditional foods. Me and Sam ate Nasi Lemak while Tom and Rohan ate Roti Canai, which are both very traditional Malay meals.

After food, me and Sam were keen to visit the theme park within the Times Square shopping centre. Before we even reached the theme park, we were taken aback by the sheer size of the mall, which spanned over 13 levels. Looking up, it seemed like the floors were never ending. The theme park was fun, featuring a series of good rides, all encompassed within the walls of the mall.

At night, we returned to the same area to eat and then returned to the hostel for an early night in preparation for our bus journey the next day.

We took a 5 1/2 hour bus north to Georgetown, Penang. The bus was comfortable and air conditioned, which was a nice surprise. With there being 4 of us travelling together, we were able to book a fantastic apartment for little cost. This ended up being great as we quickly realised there wasn’t a great deal to do. During our 3 days we saw a temple and visited an underwhelming 3d museum, but aside from that there isn’t much to report besides nice food, another infinity pool and a few beers.

Next up, Cameron Highlands!

Best memory: Viewing the skyline from the pool in our hotel.
